Tungnath Temple peacefully adorned on the Chandranath Parvat is the highest Shiva temple in the world and the highest Panch Kedar temple of Uttarakhand

It is the third (Tritiya Kedar) in the pecking order of the Panch Kedars. Tungnath is perched at an elevation of 3, 680 metres above sea level and is considered to be more than 1,000 years old.

Tungnath, located in Uttarakhand, India, is home to the highest Shiva temple in the world and is a popular destination for pilgrims and trekkers alike. Here are some popular activities to enjoy in Tungnath:

1. Trekking

  • Tungnath Temple Trek: The trek to Tungnath Temple is a short yet steep 5 km hike from Chopta. The route is scenic, passing through meadows and offering views of the Himalayan ranges.
  • Chandrashila Summit: After reaching Tungnath, many trekkers continue to Chandrashila, which is about 1.5 km further up. The summit offers panoramic views of the Himalayan peaks, including Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Kedarnath.

2. Pilgrimage

  • Visit Tungnath Temple: Tungnath is one of the Panch Kedar temples and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is a significant pilgrimage site, especially for devotees of Shiva.

3. Camping

  • Camping in Chopta: The base point of the trek, Chopta, is a popular camping destination. There are several campsites offering tents, and it's a serene spot to enjoy the surrounding nature.

4. Photography and Birdwatching

  • Nature Photography: The stunning landscape and high-altitude flora and fauna make it a great place for photography. The sunrise view from Chandrashila is especially popular.

    • Basic first-aid supplies are usually provided by trekking guides, along with other necessary safety equipment like oxygen cylinders in some cases (for high altitudes).
  6. Tungnath Temple Darshan:

    • A visit to Tungnath Temple is included as the central point of the trek. If you are trekking on your own, there are no entry fees for the temple itself.
  7. Chandrashila Summit (Optional):

    • For those wishing to continue to Chandrashila Peak after Tungnath, this is generally included in most organized trekking packages.

Exclusions:

  1. Transport to Chopta:

    • Most trekking packages exclude transportation from your starting point (like Haridwar or Rishikesh) to Chopta, which is the base for the Tungnath trek. You’ll need to arrange your own vehicle or public transport.
  2. Personal Expenses:

    • Items like snacks, bottled water, personal gear (trekking poles, hiking boots, etc.), or additional services (laundry, etc.) are usually not included.
  3. Insurance:

    • Travel or medical insurance is generally not included, so you would need to secure your own insurance for the trek.
  4. Porters or Mule Service:

    • If you have heavy luggage, porters or mule services to carry your gear may not be included unless you book them separately.
  5. Specialty Gear:

    • While tents and sleeping bags may be included in camping packages, personal trekking gear like trekking poles, shoes, waterproof jackets, etc., are generally not provided.
  6. Extra Stay or Sightseeing:

    • If you wish to extend your stay in Chopta or explore other areas like Deoria Tal or Kedarnath, these activities will likely be excluded from a standard Tungnath trek package.
  7. Any Temple Donations or Special Rituals:

    • Donations to the Tungnath Temple or participation in special poojas (rituals) are typically not covered in trekking costs.
  8. Winter Equipment (Snow Trekking):

    • If you are trekking in winter and need crampons, gaiters, or other snow trekking equipment, these might not be included.

       General Tips for the Tungnath Trek:

  • Weather Conditions: Be prepared for changing weather, especially if you're trekking in winter or during the rainy season.
  • Fitness Level: While the trek is relatively short (4 km to the temple and an additional 1.5 km to Chandrashila), it's steep, so moderate physical fitness is recommended.
  • Best Time to Visit: The ideal trekking season is from April to November. During winter (December to March), the temple is closed, but the trek is still possible for snow trekking.

Day 1: Arrival in Chopta

  • Travel: Reach Chopta from Haridwar/Rishikesh via road (approx. 7-8 hours by car or bus).
  • Stay: Overnight at a campsite or guesthouse in Chopta.
  • Activities: Explore the beautiful surroundings and acclimatize to the altitude.

Day 2: Trek to Tungnath Temple & Chandrashila Summit

  • Start Early: Begin the trek from Chopta (4 km to Tungnath).
  • Tungnath Temple: Visit the temple, the highest Shiva temple in the world.
  • Chandrashila Summit: Optional 1.5 km trek further to Chandrashila Peak for panoramic views.
  • Return to Chopta: Descend back to Chopta in the evening.
  • Stay: Overnight at Chopta.

Day 3: Explore Nearby & Departure

  • Optional: Visit Deoria Tal (2 km trek from Sari village, near Chopta) or explore Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary.
  • Travel Back: Depart for Haridwar/Rishikesh or continue to your next destination.
