Gaumukh Tapovan is one of the most rewarding treks you will ever do.

There are summit views and there are ‘big’ summit views. On the Gaumukh Tapovan trek, you don’t just see the best views of Mt Shivling. You see Mt Shivling right from the base to its summit. And if you don’t know about Mt Shivling, it’s one of the most beautiful looking mountains in our country. No wonder the mountain has been featured in our gold calendar every year since it was published.

But wait. Not only Mt Shivling, you see the Bhagirathi sisters from top to bottom. Sometimes we feel the Bhagirathi sisters are even grander than Mt Shivling because the three of them form a massif, which dominates the landscape.

before we begin, here are some quick facts about the Gaumukh Tapovan trek:

Gaumukh Trek is a 46 km trek hiked over 6 days  in the Greater Himalayas. It lies in the state of Uttarakhand and begins and ends at the pilgrim town of Gangotri.

The trail snakes through the Greater Himalayas within the confines of Gangotri National Park. It is a moderate-difficult trek  that can be attempted by beginners if you prepare well.

The gaumukh trek, leading to the source of the bhagirathi river in uttrakhand , india , offers a range of activities and experinces for trekkers. here are some  key activites you can enjoy:

1. Trekking :The  primary activity  is trekking  through  the picturesque land scapes ,including alpine meadows, rocky terrains,and galciers.

2. Nature photography: The trek provides stunning views of snow -capped peaks , lush valleys and unique flora and fauna ,making  it ideal for  nature and  landscape photogarhy 

3. camping : You can camp at designated spoits along the trek, such  as bhojwasa ,and expeirence the serene environment and starry nights.

4. wildlife spotting : You might spot various Himalayan wildlife ,including the bharal ( blue sheep ),Himalayan tahr, and various bird spieces.

5.Glacier observation :At Gaumukh , you  can  observe the glacier from which the  bhagirathi  river originates.It's  significant  site for understanding  glaciology .

6.Spiritual reflection :Many trekkers visit  Gaumukh for its spiritual significance, as it is considered a scared  site  in hinduism .

Short Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival at Gangotri(10,050 ft)

  • Arrive at Gangotri, meet our trek representative/Guide at Gangotri. Check in your hotel. Visit Gangotri Temple for evening aarti and buy trek essential items (if any) from Gangotri market.

Day 02: Gangotri – Bhojwasa (12,415 ft) Trek Distance:14km

  • Visit the sacred shrine of Goddess Ganga - Gangotri Temple and buy all the necessary items from the market. The trek starts with a decent trail and it remains the same till further 2 km where you need to show permits. As you walk deep into the valley the vegetation also decreases. Continue trekking to reach Chirbasa which is situated 9 kms from Gangotri Town. Cross small streams en route to Chirbasa. Chirbasa is a good campsite and the last point where you’ll see good vegetation.  Chirbasa is situated at an elevation of 3580 mts above sea level.
  • Bhojwasa is located 5 kms from Chirbasa. Bhagirathi Peaks stands high above the ground and is constantly visible during the trek. The trail not only goes through rugged terrains along with the Bhagirathi River but also climbs up to rugged mountains. Bhojbasa is a vast open expanse of land in the valley, situated at an elevation of 3,800 mts above sea level. Camping at Bhojwasa.

Day 03: Bhojwasa – Gaumukh Glacier -tapovan(14,203 ft)  Trek Distance6 km

  • Difficult. Gradual ascent for 2.5 hours. 2 hours glacier walk followed by 1 hour of moderate ascent. Final 1.5 hours is a steep ascent.

Day 4:Tapovan (14,203 ft) to Bhojbasa (12,415 ft)Trek Distance: 6 km 

  • Moderate Difficult. Level trail to Chirbasa

Day 5:Bhojbasa (12,415 ft) to Gangotri (10,050 ft) Trek Distance: 14 km

  • Tricky descent over bouldery section

Day6:Drive from Gangotri to Dehradun Drive distance: 242 km
